Using children’s literature to talk about sensitive topics can be so powerful. Thank you, Becca Eisenberg, for making that possible by writing the book My Second Year of Kindergarten. This is a delightfully book that highlights the positives for repeating kindergarten. Who would even think about their being benefits to repeating a grade in school? Becca did, and has done a wonderful job putting this into a story format. The main character talks first-hand about the fact that he is not scared to ride the bus or meet his teacher. He won’t be frustrated to learn new things because he has already had practice and knows what is expected of him. He can be a helper to the teacher and other kids. What a wonderful book to help parents and educators launch a discussion, calm nerves and build confidence around the need to repeat kindergarten.
